The plant life of Kenya is diversified. Along the coast are forests containing palm, mangrove, teak, copal, and sandalwood trees. Forests of baobab, euphorbia and acacia trees cover the lowlands to an elevation of approximately 915 m (approximately 3000 ft). Extensive tracts of savanna, interspersed with groves of acacia and papyrus, characterize the terrain from about 915 to 2745 m (about 3000 to 9000 ft). The principal species in the dense rain forest of the eastern and southeastern mountain slopes are camphor and bamboo. The alpine zone (above about 3350 m/11,000 ft) contains large senecios and lobelias.

In the early 1990s Kenya attracted about 680,000 visitors annually, yielding revenue of more than $209 million. Tourists primarily visit Kenya's national parks and game reserves to see and photograph the wildlife; many also enjoy the beaches along the Indian Ocean coastline. Tsavo National Park and Marsabit National Reserve are two of the country's largest parks.
Uganda has a wide variety of plant life, from the mvuli tree and elephant grass of the Uganda plateau to the dry thorn scrub, acacia, and euphorbia of the southwest. The country also provides a habitat for many animals, some of which are protected in national parks. The chimpanzee inhabits the rain forests, and species of antelope (including the eland and hartebeest), and the elephant, rhinoceros, lion and leopard, are found in the grasslands.
